Lowndes-Valdosta Tourism Authority keeps search on for new executive director

The Lowndes-Valdosta Tourism Authority keeps its search on for a new executive director. Frank Simons has been the interim executive director since the last executive director left earlier this year.

The search has also been posted locally. More than 300 linemen with Georgia Power were housed and about 3,000 meals were served during Hurricane Irma.

The authority said that there was a net loss of two events for the conference center during the storm, while continuing normal business operations.

A new generator is one of the major concerns. It is important that the authority looks at the generator issue as soon as possible, because it would be very difficult to continue business if power was lost.

There are also cracks on the surface of the kitchen floor due to constant heating and cooling and these need to be addressed, as they could create an issue for molds and bacteria.

The Valdosta-Lowndes Film Tourism Authority said that it has put in a bid and won for the regional SSUSA Softball Championship to come to Valdosta in spring 2018.

Around1,200-1,500 people are expected to attend the Valdosta-Lowndes County area in the spring. The games run Tuesday through Sunday. Since the teams travel in family groups, increased area shopping is expected. The next tourism authority meeting is scheduled 8 a.m., Oct. 24.
