Boat capsizes off Lagos, 19 rescued but one dead

On Tuesday a boat had capsized of Lagos Island injuring 19 people and leaving one dead.

It was reported that the boat had capsized on the 3rd Mainland Bridge axis of the waterways. The people rescued have been rushed to the Ebute-Ero Jetty while the search for the rest of the victims were still continuing. The passenger who lost his life in this mishap was said to have sunk with the boat’s carcass.

Meanwhile investigations are in the process to unravel the exact cause of the fatal accident.

Lagos State Waterways Authority’s Managing Director Damilola Emmanuel confirmed the death of one of the passengers on board the boat.

He added that the strict enforcement would be carefully undertaken all across the State. He said that the government would carry out all efforts to make sure that operators would adhere to the safety standards.

The LASWA MD said that LASWA should immediately start being very strict on enforcement.

He personally feels that LASWA is planning to clamp down on the jetties that are substandard and this has been on its mind since quite some time. Last Wednesday the Lagos State Government said that it had improved efforts to clamp down on illegal jetty and also boat operators in the State as fresh efforts to check the tide of boat mishaps that are frequently caused by illegal operations on the island waterways.
