Chinese tourists surge in Canada while US tourists decline


Chinese tourists began to increase in Canada while the visit from the tourists of the United States to Canada declines.

In recent years, the international direct flights from both the countries, Canada and China have increased, which show the positive efforts in rising the tourism business.

Last year, the arrivals of Chinese tourists to Canada have been increased to 610000, which is an increase of about 24% than 2015. This year, China becomes the largest market in arrivals after United Kingdom and United States and second largest in tourists’ expenditure after united States.

It is showing that the tourism project “Destination Canada” drives more tourists all over the world, where Chinese tourists are the most. There are around 250 million of tourists visiting Canada is from China.

The new direct flights from China to Canada generate an average load factor of 80 percent. Karen Soyka, Travel Alberta’s Vice President-Business Development said that China is now Alberta’s largest and fastest-growing Asian market with 85,000 arrivals in 2015 and has a rise in millennial travellers, she says.

The evident gush of Chinese tourists to Canada in 2016 contrasts with U.S. Commerce Department figures for January to March which was a down about 0.5 percent and March 2017 shows a down 2.1 percent.

U.S. President Trump’s anti-China rhetoric and travel bans undoubtedly are part of the reason for the decline as there is a dilemma of international relations between India and China.

It is huge increase in less than 10 years. In 2008, Canada welcomed only 160,000 Chinese visitors — and while all major destinations worldwide can claim a ‘me-too’ in growth when swarms of Chinese started travelling long-haul.

Canada is the top choice to visit by the Chinese. It is expecting more of the strong growth at around 23 per cent this year. Canada does have a bit of a head-start over other leading destinations, as more than 1.3 million Chinese Canadians live there, creating a healthy visiting friends-and-relatives market in travel and tourism industry.

Canada was granted Approved Destination Status by China only in 2010.

The European Union got the designation in 2004, and the U.S. did in 2007.

What spurred the exponential growth for Canada was more direct flights, while a 10-year multiple-entry visas for Chinese to Canada since 2005 also helped.

The air seat capacity grew 26 per cent last year. Canada is now accessible from 11 gateway cities in China. It is the four largest metropolitan areas are all served with non-stop flights from China. In the first half of this year, the international air seat capacity from China to Canada rose 36.9 per cent over the same period in 2016.
